According to the Canadian Press the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is planning to cut 800 jobs by September. CBC President Hubert Lacroix expressed sympathy for the effected employees, but said that the cuts were necessary.
We’ve done and will continue to do everything we can to minimize the impact of the situation on our staff. But in a company where 60 per cent of the overall budget goes to salaries, it’s simply impossible to bridge a gap of this magnitude without having a major impact on people.
The Canadian Media Guild, the union representing most of the CBC’s employees, placed the blame solely on the government. Being a public broadcaster, the CBC operates on funds allocated from the Canadian government.
Most of the cuts will effect national programming as the company tried to retain it’s regional stations.
