In a country where 99 percent of music is pirated, Google China has launched a free music download service to compete with other search engines and attrack the traffic it needs.
Record labels, according to Mashable, are happy to get advertising revenue in exchange for giving out music for free because they don’t get much revenue in the country from sales.
It’s a necessity, really; to be able to compete with Baidu, which also offers music downloads (the legality of which is, however, disputed) and holds over 60 percent of the search market, offering free music downloads is a must for Google.
