Twiggle? Google in talks to acquire Twitter

TechCrunch is reporting that Google is in the early stages of negotiations with Twitter to purchase the micro-blogging site.

This is strange for two reasons. First, Google hasn’t made an acquisition in almost six months and had to fire 200 people (announced last week).

Second, Twitter turned down offers from Facebook, which offered double what Google has offered according to rumors.

Why would Google want Twitter? We’ve been arguing for some time that Twitter’s real value is in search. It holds the keys to the best real time database and search engine on the Internet, and Google doesn’t even have a horse in the game.

However, an update to the post last night says Twitter wouldn’t sell for less than $1 billion (makes me think of Dr. Evil.)
