Being a native Michigander I was quite touched to read this article about Jay Leno. He’s doing a pair of completely free stand up shows at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Free. Parking, tickets…all paid for. The show is his way of trying to bring a little laughter to an area so hard hit by the crumbling economy.
Of course there is a little controversy. Several members of the Detroit City Council were critical of Leno for not performing in the city limits, but to his credit the Detroit Pistons donated the Palace (their home arena) for the event so it only made sense to do it there. According to Detroit City Councilwoman Martha Reeves, Leno is open to the possibility of doing a show in the city sometime in the not too distant future.
While I’m sure neither the Michigan State Spartans appearance in the Final Four or these comedy shows will turn around Detroit’s economy, I hope enough of these pleasant distractions can occupy the citizens of Detroit’s time until things start looking brighter for their jobs and their lives.
